It wasn’t your typical 9 AM at Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort this morning. The sound and smell of fresh ground coffee emitted from what is now the third Starbucks location on property and as soon as the location’s large glass doors opened this morning, a series of new magical mornings begun.
The location itself operates just like any Starbucks on your nearest street corner – they serve up their delicious blends of coffees and teas, La Boulange pastries and other treats in either “to go” or “for here” form. You don’t need a ticket to the theme parks to enter it. They accept your Starbucks cards as payment so you can get more stars, but sadly don’t honor Annual Passholder discounts. They offer fast Wi-Fi so you can browse and work, as well as a spacious outdoor patio with plenty of seating and shade that fits the area very well. All typical things that the green maiden is known for is here.
What isn’t typical but is also here is the environment that all these things are placed in. From the moment you walk up to the location near the World of Disney store, you are immediately met with a large glass facade flanked with giant wood panels. Immediately inside, you have a vaulted ceiling with dark earth tones and what appears to be stage lights which illuminate the very large counter area where the proper-looking baristas pour the goods. Also inside, there is a tasting area where you can sample and buy some of Starbucks’ premium reserve blends from an experienced barista and an interactive area where you can see yourself in chalk form that plays on Starbucks’ history and love for chalk art.
To put it simply, this Starbucks isn’t typical because they aren’t just offering you coffee at this location. They’re offering you an experience and we’ve come to expect that especially from working together with Disney and that’s telling a good story. “We took inspiration from Disney and now we’re able to tell our ‘bean to cup’ story on a more grand scale that guests to Disneyland have come to expect,” said Bill Sleeth, Starbucks’ Vice President of Design said in our chat. By having another location so near and even more accessible to guests visiting the theme parks or just Downtown Disney, the magic of storytelling is seamless and never ending. Even at a Starbucks.
