After much rumor, it was confirmed today that the Walt Disney Studios will be producing and releasing a sequel to “Mary Poppins”! As was rumored, the title role will be played by actress Emily Blunt who will be joined by the also rumored Lin-Manuel Miranda who will play a new character named Jack.
The story of the sequel will once again take from the other novels that P.L. Travers wrote and Walt Disney was so delighted by. Award-winning screenwriter David Magee (“Life of Pi”, “Finding Neverland”) will write the script with inspiration from Travers’ novels. Here’s the official synopsis –
…the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
“Mary Poppins Returns” is the official title of the musical film and some top talent behind the camera will help bring the new film to life.
Award-winning director Rob Marshall will return to directing work with the Walt Disney Studios after having directed “Into The Woods”. Music will be written by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) accompanied by award-winning songwriter Scott Wittman who will write the film’s new original songs.
With so many award-winning talents lending themselves to this film, there’s certainly a lot being invested into doing a follow-up to one of the most beloved Disney films of all time. Once again, time will tell if those winds in the east will bring good favor from audiences at the box office when the film hits theaters on Christmas Day, 2018.
