Scratch It Out.

We have some sad news to report today, folks. That type of drawing and animation seen in the picture above that Walt himself perfected and took pride in no longer exists at The Walt Disney Company.

Earlier last week, Disney marked the end of the hand-drawn animation department by laying off many of the veteran animators in Walt Disney Animation Studios which perfected the art for years through the multiple ground-breaking and award-winning films this generation has seen and beyond Walt himself.

Although the reason for the cuts haven’t been revealed, many speculate that the Disney is just prepping itself for the future with the transition of all their animated films now coming from computers, which would cut costs.

Although costs must be cut as the business grows, we still believe that the art form of hand drawn animation can still live on, don’t you think? We aren’t Disney “purists,” but we do think that hand drawn animation still brings a lot of emotion to films with the stroke of every animator’s pencil. Take “Paperman”!

Although the end of an era has come and the cuts have been made, we still hope that animators and their pencils will eventually make their way back to the desk creating the films that we’ve loved.

What do you all think about the loss of the hand drawn animation department at Disney? Do you remember the hand drawn animated films? Do you think hand drawn animation differs from computer animation? Let us know in the comments!

R U MU?
In other words “Are you MU?” MU being Monster’s University. The school where monsters from all around the world get trained and get a formal degree in scarring.
It also happens to be the same school that Mike and Sulley went to before joining Monsters Inc.! Do you want to be a scare-er? MU is the place to go and what better way to get more information on the school than by going to its website - http://monstersuniversity.com/edu/index.html

For us humans, this is a mock website created by our friends at Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar to get us ready for the prequel to “Monsters Inc.” called “Monsters University”. The film, set to release later next year, is going to tell the story of Mike and Sulley and how they became good friends, but we have a feeling it’ll be a little bit more dramatic than that.
Here’s a partial plot line -

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

We can’t wait to see it when it screams into theaters on June 21, 2013. We even can’t wait to see the original Monsters film in 3D when it re-releases theaters for a limited time on December 19, 2012! But as for now, check out MU’s website. Some of us college students on the DE Staff are being enticed to transfer schools…

Bad Guy Blues.

No one likes being the bad guy. We’re sure that even the bad guys don’t like even being bad guys for so long. Take Wreck-It Ralph for instance.

If you’ve seen the debut trailer for Disney’s newest animated film of the same name, you’ll get to meet Ralph and why he might have a change of heart about the ‘bad guy’ thing. But as in any scenario like this, he is conflicted by two sides and his conflict isn’t being helped as his bad guy friends try to remind him of who he really is.

Enjoy the clip above and be sure to see if Ralph really is bad when the movie hits theaters on November 2!

Frankenweenie Meets DCA

Since the Hollywood premiere of Frankenweenie was yesterday evening, we wanted to bring up your attention to the wonderful art exhibition showcasing the figurines and sets that were used in the making of this film!

Frankenweenie’ tells the story of a boy and his very beloved dog and the boy’s attempt to revive the dog after an unfortunate accident. The film, directed by Tim Burton, utilizes stop motion (think Gumby) filmmaking and if you know anything about stop motion, creating a full-length feature film takes a lot of time and attention to detail.

Now on display, guests to the new Disney California Adventure Park will be able to see the various pieces of “art” that it took to create the film in a new traveling exhibit.

From now until November 5, “The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition” will be inside Hollywood Land where guests can see original sketches, props, sets, and puppets all from the creative mind of Tim Burton

The exhibit started in Barcelona, Spain on June 18 and by the time it hits Disney California Adventure, the exhibit will have visited 7 different countries including France, England, Japan, Mexico, and finally the U.S.A.

Etch-A-Sketch

One thing we recently found out about the Disneyland Resort is the fact that there are some great souvenirs that guests can take home. Aside from the plastic toy sets and magnets, one thing that a true Disney fan can take home is a sketch from a professional sketch artist!

The foundation of the Disney company was Walt Disney and his love for animation and drawing and what better way to take home the full Disney experience with a hand-drawn sketch of your favorite Disney characters!

Take a look at the video above and meet one of those sketch artists named David Mitchell who is more than willing to make you a Disney masterpiece.

What would you want one of these sketch artists to draw for you?
