This song inspired by Bing Bong will make any sad moment more joy-ful.

We felt many things when we met Bing Bong in Disney•Pixar’s “Inside Out”.

It wasn’t just his composure of pink cotton candy or the fact that he cried candy that made everything better. It was his huge heart and relentless pursuit of making Riley happy that made us fall for her imaginary friend.

People around the world have been influenced by the lovable character like Moira Dela Torre. The Filipino singer/songwriter was inspired to write a simple, yet powerful song that told of Bing Bong’s most admirable trait (and the one that made us cry sob) – sacrifice.

“I watched Inside Out with my friend, Sam Milby, and we were sandwiched by 5 year olds. I think we all thought Bing Bong was the bad guy which is why i think we were all caught off guard when he sacrificed his life for Riley,” she said in an interview with me. She then returned home inspired to write the song, but couldn’t seem to finish it. It wasn’t until a week later that those final words came amid a situation of real-life sacrifice.

She continued, “I found out that a few of our friends from church had gone to an outreach [in the Philippines] and were swept away by a strong current. 5 of them died. One of our friends, Kristine, survived. Her fiance, Rocky, didn’t. I later found out that Rocky was actually nowhere near the water and was safe but ran in to save Kristine anyway.

She survived.

He didn’t.

Soon after i heard the story, I finished the song in the next ten minutes, realizing how symbolic Bing Bong is in so many people’s lives,” she said.

“The song is basically what I think people who passed away would’ve wanted to say if they had the chance.”

The song itself has grown in popularity after being posted online just a few days ago. It even made its way to “Inside Out” co-director Ronnie del Carmen who sent Moira a personal note on Twitter saying “it was beautiful.”

With feedback like that coming from a person like that, it would be safe to say that if Bing Bong were to ever have a theme song aside from the one he liked to sing, Moira’s song would probably be it.

“Take Her To The Moon For Me”

by Moira Dela Torre • Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube // Snapchat: moirarachelle

I know it’s been awhile since our eyes last met
Too many words were left unsaid
Your head was poking out of the driver’s seat
Eyes full of tears, I couldn’t leave

Refrain:
No matter what I do I still feel you coming back to me
When I know that you never will
So before I say goodbye, would you do one last thing for me
Be happy

Chorus:
And take, take her to the moon for me
Take her like you promised me
Say you love her every time like how you told me the last time
Someday I know we’ll meet again
In heaven by the rainbow’s end
And I only wish you happiness
Until we meet again

Wish I could stick around and fight back your tears
Tell you “My love, I’m still here”
Someday we’ll understand why I had to leave
But for now I need you to set me free

(Repeat Refrain & Chorus)

Bridge:
No matter where you are
You’ll always have my heart
No matter where you are
I’ll love you from afar

So be happy
Don’t be afraid to be happy
