Disney Movies VR is a place where you can’t watch Disney movies in virtual reality

Earlier this week, Disney launched Disney Movies VR. It’s an app available exclusively on the content streaming platform Steam. The app will allow users with VR headsets and the right computing equipment to immerse themselves in some of their favorite Disney movie worlds.

The app description gives more insight on the experience –

Transport yourself into the wonderful world of Disney from your very own living room with Disney Movies VR. This app is a fully-immersive experience where you visit themed worlds, including Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilm, and interact with some of your favorite characters in their natural environments. Choose from multiple scenes in Disney movies including The Jungle Book, Captain America and Star Wars and be a part of the action!

Yes, you can look around and ponder at Kaa coming to eat you or an AT-AT coming to stomp on you. However, you cannot do what the app’s name implies. You cannot watch any Disney movie in a virtual reality environment. And that might be a good thing.

Netflix’s CEO said to The Verge that the company did studies that showed that watching a full series of shows straight or a full-length feature film with a VR headset would disorient and tire the watcher only after a few minutes. That certainly wouldn’t be a magical experience that Disney would want their brand associated with.

For now, you can travel to those worlds within the app or check out any Disney movie’s official Facebook Page as many of the Disney movie VR experiences can be watched their, too.
