Everyone get ready and make way for the arrival of Elena of Avalor.

“Elena of Avalor” is an upcoming Disney Channel animated series about a strong, brave, and beautiful Latina princess, Elena, and her adventures in the Kingdom of Avalor. Her show officially premiers on July 22nd, but if you are anxiously anticipating to see her and can’t wait any longer, you can check out the treasures that are already available at the Disney Store. Additional items will be available at mass retailers starting July 22nd.

Not only will you be able to collect the character dolls from the show, but you will also be able to buy clothing and accessories that will allow you to dress like Princess Elena herself!

Not only can you buy the actual outfits to express your excitement for the arrival of the princess, but you can also have your daily outfits be inspired by her look as well. Here is my own Elena-inspired look, complete with an off the shoulder ruffled blouse and flower clip:

Most of the media right now is focusing on the fact that Elena is going to be a Latina-inspired princess. Which I agree is quite exciting. There are a few princesses whom I’ve personally had growing up that I was somewhat able to ethnically identify with, and yet, they still didn’t seem as “princes-ey” as the ones in castles and kingdoms.

So I get it… the thought of Elena, a Latina princess, coming into the picture is exciting and new. I would be able to dress up like her and ACTUALLY feel like I look like her. I could go into this article focusing on the fact that Latina girls and other “brown” girls, such as myself, can praise Disney for the fact that they created a princess that others can personally identify and culturally and physically relate with, but in reality, Elena of Avalor is not JUST about Elena being a Latina.

Shocking… I know, but let me explain…

In the show, Elena will be taking on the role as a leader and will be learning from various lessons that come along with becoming that new role. She is a 16 year old girl who will be taking on the huge responsibility of caring for the needs of her own family and community. I believe Elena will display courage and resilience, and will teach us that although you may be young, you can still make a significant and positive impact on others simply based on the choices you make.

You can still be a leader no matter where you are in life.

I am glad that they are creating a princess that will encourage and teach girls at a young age to be strong and brave. The thought that this independent princess is also going to be “brown-skinned” is just the cherry on top of an already sweet idea. I hope Elena encourages and empowes young girls, especially young girls of color, to focus less on and be more than the color of their skin – to be brave, honest, hardworking, compassionate, and loving.

I hope the show teaches and emphasizes to all girls that being a princess is so much more than pursuing and focusing on what you look like on the outside, but moreso, pursuing the best version of yourself by seeing your own potential, choosing kindness, and treating others with great respect and compassion. To all the ladies out there, know that you, as a young girl or women, CAN be great and CAN make a huge impact in whatever you do.

If you want to dress up like Elena of Avalor (no matter what age or color that you are),  don’t just wear the clothes, but also clothe yourself with the courage, strength, and compassion that comes along with being like Elena.
