Culture meets fashion in “Destination: Disney Style”

Destination: Disney Style is a brand new YouTube show that pairs popular bloggers with different cultures in order to explore Disney fashion around the world.

It’s no surprise that Disney wants to focus on fashion. The Disney Style blog, for example, has grown so much from its birth in 2013, amassing more than a million monthly views. Fashion is quite an industry itself: the global apparel market, for example, is currently worth more than 3 trillion dollars.

This series, however, aims to see fashion as more than just views and dollar signs.

“From the catwalk in Shanghai to the sidewalk in New York, this new series sees YouTube’s biggest fashion stars explore what Disney style means around the globe,” said Josh Silverman, EVP Global Licensing at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, in a press release. “Fashion and pop culture collide in such creative ways, and it’s incredible how fans infuse their favorite Disney characters into daily looks to make a truly personal style statement.”

This first episode, hosted by DIY and lifestyle blogger LaurDIY, features Disney style in Japan, showing how Disney is applied in a variety of ways – from glasses, to designer pieces, to even complete Disney-inspired outfits.

I appreciate that this video isn’t overwhelmingly focused on western views of fashion and Disney. On the contrary, this first episode features a number of style icons as well as every day Disney-fashion wearers from Japan, and is mostly made up of interviews with these people.

The video also went beyond simple visuals to actually teach not just ideas about fashion, but also about Japanese culture itself. Culture, in fact, was a big theme of this video, and at the end of the day this episode of Destination: Disney Style covered more than just fashion – it revealed the way Disney acts as a global, cross-cultural entity not just through style, but also through the way people from a certain culture relate to the brand itself. Seeing the birth of a style through the crossing of Tokyo and Disney cultures is fascinating, and makes me look forward to future videos.

Destination: Disney Style will air a new segment this August every Tuesday at 10 PM Pacific Time. Future episodes include:

  • Jaleesa Moses and Shanghai Fashion Week (Aug 9)
  • Meredith Foster and Disney x Coach (Aug 16)
  • Lucy & Lydia and London Calling (Aug 23)
  • LaurDIY and Finding Pixar Fashion (Aug 30)

Tune in on the channel to get more Disney Style and to experience more cross-cultural Disney exploration!
