Marvel and the publishers of Kingdom Hearts are making an Avengers video game

Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix have announced that they are partnering to produce The Avengers project – the beginning of a plan to release multiple games based on different Marvel superheroes over the next few years. These games will feature both classic characters and settings and an original storyline.

The first game will be created by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, developers of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex series respectively. Though little is known about the games besides what we can see in the teaser trailer, more information is promised to come in 2018.

“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced,“ said Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment. “The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

This partnership is reminiscent of the Kingdom Hearts games – a series that also takes advantage of already-popular franchises, releases games over multiple years, and is created under Square Enix. Whether or not The Avengers project will be as popular as Kingdom Hearts, however, remains to be seen. If this new project is to learn anything from its Final Fantasy-esque predecessor, hopefully it’s to be as creative and original in terms of story and to be more exact and honest in terms of release dates.

Check out the teaser trailer for The Avengers project above, and be on the lookout for future games!
