For those who’ve said that Star Wars should have more leading ladies in that universe, your wishes are being granted! Lucasfilm has announced to launch a new original “micro” animated series that centers around Star Wars’ leading ladies. The animated shorts will tell the untold stories of “everyday heroism” that shaped the lives of Rey, Jyn Erso, Sabine Wren, Princess Leia, Ahsoka Tano and others.
Being created by Lucasfilm Animation, the 2-3 minute films will also have the voice talents of the original people who voiced the female Star Wars characters including Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, Tiya Sircar, Ashley Eckstein, and Lupita Nyong’o (who’ll serve as the shorts’ narrator).
While the limited series is focusing on the female characters, Lucasfilm hopes that the stories would be more of a pull to both male and female audiences who love the Star Wars franchise.
“Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity,” said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. “We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars.”
Those people they’re looking to reach might be of the younger kind, however, since a product line will launch to support the series. Books, apparel, bedding, and a line of toys from Hasbro, including new ‘Adventure Figures’ – a fusion between traditional dolls and action figures – are expected.
The move to create a series with female leads isn’t new for Lucasfilm. While it started with the new cinematic trilogy with “The Force Awakens,” the creation of “Forces of Destiny” shows that they aren’t close to being done. The shift of focusing on female talent will likely make the Star Wars universe one of the largest and most diverse franchises in entertainment.
“Star Wars Forces of Destiny” will debut its first shorts on Disney’s YouTube Channel in July (with 8 more expected in fall 2017). The products will launch sometime shortly after in summer 2017.
