A Mini-History of Penny Machines at Disneyland Resort
Whether you are an avid pressed penny collector or a penny pincher, the Disneyland Resort has the souvenir you’re looking for.
In Disney’s Electro-Mechanical shop, employees create and maintain penny press machines. The first pressed pennies have been around long before Disneyland. In 1893, the first pressed penny machines were introduced at the World’s Colombian Exposition in Chicago. When pressed pennies were brought to Disneyland they had the first fully automated machines. Since then, they have created over 500 unique coin designs.
Currently, there are more than 40 machines at the Disneyland Resort, which each have three different options. The machines can press pennies, dimes, nickels, and tokens.
For Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary, 60 new pressed penny designs were made available.
If you would like to add to your collection or start a new one, you can find maps listing where to find penny machines at City Hall (Disneyland) or the Chamber of Commerce (DCA).
Keep a look out, sources say there might be Star Wars pennies coming soon.
