Big Hero 6 is getting its on show on Disney XD

Today Disney has officially announced that the popular 2014 film Big Hero 6 is getting its very own TV show on Disney XD!

The show, produced by Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley (Kim Possible) is currently slated to be released in 2017. Gary Marsh, President and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, is confident in their work, saying, “we are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world-class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and  Baymax — can deliver.”

Little else has been announced about the film, but we do know that the plot will center on Hiro’s adventures as both a student at San Fransokyo University and as a part of the well-loved super team. It’s been confirmed that the whole team – including Honey Lemon, Go Go, Wasabi, Fred, and even Baymax! – will be featured on this new show.

Other Disney films seem to take the feature-film sequel route, but this kind of expansion of the Big Hero 6 world seems appropriate, as it gives Disney an opportunity to better explore a wide range of characters. As commentators note, the film featured a very diverse cast, so this new TV show has great potential to develop these characters in different ways.

This announcement comes right on the heels of Disney’s recent release of The Lion Guard and also brings up older news concerning a new Tangled TV show, also releasing 2017. As Variety points out, Disney seems to lean more and more on sequels and expansions, and notably many of these (at least the animated features) have taken form not in film, but as TV shows. Perhaps from here on out Disney will choose to release animated sequels as TV shows rather than feature films!

Big Hero 6 on Disney XD will be released in 2017.
