Celebrate Star Wars Day with a “Legion” of Stormtroopers
This Sunday marks a very special day for Star Wars fans. It will be May the 4th and if you say it with a lisp, it’ll be mean a good omen for you as the Force will indeed be with you. Over the course of the unofficial “Star Wars Day” will once again unite padawans and Jedis for celebrations of George Lucas’ “stellar” stories. If you’re looking to get in on the celebration, you need not look far if you’re in the Southern California area like we are.
Beginning today, you can head on down to the heart of Downtown Los Angeles for a very special and unique art exhibit. That art is all centered around the infamous Stormtrooper helmet. You know, those guards of Darth Vader and the Dark Side who ironically wear white armor. For Dan Owen, the Vice President of Creativity for Disney Consumer Products, the idea of using their white helmets as a canvas to art just simply made sense. After shrinking down the helmet and making it the canvas, the task of finding unique artists to re-imagine the helmet began…which actually was an easy task for Owen when he sent his initial email out to all the creative minds he knew both inside and outside of Disney asking to take part.
“I wasn’t expecting this amount of quality and participation,” Owen said. “We had over 300 art directors, sound engineers, and sculptors from Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Neff (a clothing brand) put so much passion into these helmets with such a quick deadline.” That deadline was earlier this week and what you see in the pictures below show you how much passion and creativity went into such an iconic piece of cinematic history.
What drove every artist in every company to create such unique pieces was the passion for Star Wars and sharing it with the fans. “This wasn’t about promoting ‘Star Wars’ or celebrating the fact of Disney buying the franchise; It was to share the passion that everyone has for vivid storytelling,” Owen said. And that intergalactic story, just shy of 37 years old, has remained a part of the culture of the world. It is very evident in this art exhibit and even in the preeminent filming of the next cinematic trilogy that the 4th will really be with us all for years to come.
