Chuck: The Man, The Legend, The Custodian

Continuing on with the Main Street USA window history lessons, we turn to one “clean” fellow. Walt Disney wanted to ensure that his park was the cleanest theme park! He personally chose Charles “Chuck” Boyajian to lead the janitorial team and gave him the job of keeping Disneyland “as clean as you keep it.”

Chuck was the foreman of American Building Maintenance, which is the company that was contracted to clean the park. After getting hired Chuck was mentored by Walt to make sure that he understood what Walt wanted. Walt said that it wasn’t just about cleaning, but about providing a great guest experience. Chuck was taught about the quality of service provided on a luxury ocean liner or a top-notch hotel.

Chuck was the very first manager of what is now called Custodial Guest Services and spent 25 years establishing a reputation of cleanliness and efficiency. Chuck was very innovative when it came to cleaning the park. He had the challenge of keeping the park clean while guests were present which meant that the restrooms were never closed.

Chuck and his team of longtime friends consisting of Top Roppa, Roy Young, Ray Sidejas, Wayne Culver, and Mike Sweeney were able to achieve Walt’s vision of maintaining the cleanest parks in the world. “The men and women of our custodial operations have set the industry standards for cleanliness. The pride of our cast members is unsurpassed,” Chuck said about his team.

Chuck retired in 1981, but his legacy still continues to pave the way for future successors who continue the traditions of cleaning that he made. In the 58 years that Disneyland has been open, only 4 people, including Chuck, have had the responsibility and honor of leading the custodial operation. Chuck was honored with his Main Street USA window at Disneyland in 1981 where it can be found near the Market House. His window inscription reads “Royal Care Co., ‘We Keep Your Castle Shining,’ Chuck Boyajian, Prop.”

Chuck passed away on August 1,2004 and was named Disney Legend a year after.
