Disney accelerates Shanghai Disney Resort Construction with $0.8 billion of increased investment

It looks like we’ll be seeing more on grand opening day of Shanghai Disney Resort, the newest Disney Park and Resort that is currently under construction in China. Everything about this resort will not only say a lot about the Chinese culture, but will make a statement to the world about its status among other Disney resorts. The plans include many shops, restaurants, and attractions all under the shadow of the largest Disney castle ever created.

With more and more interest being generated in the 6th Disney resort since its groundbreaking in 2011, Disney has decided to increase its monetary investment in the new resort for close to $1 billion. “Since we first broke ground in Shanghai we’ve been very impressed with the growth of China’s economy, especially the rapid expansion of the middle class and the significant increase in travel and tourism,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “Our accelerated expansion, including additional attractions and entertainment, will allow us to welcome more guests for a spectacular Disney experience on opening day.”

Originally, the resort would open in phases with many of the offerings still not available to guests. With the increased monetary investment, Disney has promised that much more will be available when it opens in December of 2015. The reason behind the increased investment solidifies the fact that Disney’s continued interest in Chinese tourism will yield a benefit in the future. “The expansion underscores the tremendous opportunity we see in Shanghai and demonstrates our long-term commitment to and confidence in China,” said Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
