Bella’s “Bad Day” [Interview with Bella Thorne]

The high school princess, the one expensive pair of shoes most girls wish to fill, the girl where every guy in the school can only wishes to be with, and this girl happens to be Bella Thorne. She takes up all these roles in the character of Celia in the next Disney film “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” and you might think she’s experiencing a very good day everyday, but that simply isn’t the case all the time. Bella graciously sat down with me to discuss her character and other aspects of the film.

Celia is Anthony’s (played by Dylan Minnette) love interest in the movie, whose relationship with him is tested when prom does not go the way she anticipated which creates her very bad day. Her reaction towards Anthony’s mishaps is somewhat of a downer when she acts aloof towards his family, but Bella’s takes on this view and puts a new perspective on the subject.

Though easy on the eyes, her lack of sympathy for Anthony and his family’s foibles is a topic to look deeper in to. “She’s a perfectionist” Thorne says. “It just gets so messed up, if it were from Celia’s point of view, with her perfecting their prom experience, it would seem that Anthony was the bad guy.” In a way, since this film does talk about bad days, Celia, along with Anthony’s family was also having a very bad day “and you know what? She does not like it.”

Bella then goes deeper with what it was like working with the talent in the film, Steve Carrell who plays Ben Cooper, the father of the Cooper family was “Very quiet in studying his lines,” explains Thorne. “He would just kind of sit there and look around, but once he got on set he was this big character.” Bella also describes her experiences with Dylan Minnette and Kerris Dorsey with Dylan as “very talented” and Kerris making “anything sound natural, which is a crazy talent to have.”

One important aspect of the film, if not the most prominent, was the idea of family and though Bella’s character was not part of it on-screen, the synergy of the cast reverberated towards her. “I’m technically not part of the family, but the bond they have towards each other is great…” This idea was emphasized all the more by the director of the film Miguel Arteta who said “We were making a movie about them authentically liking each other and loving each other while we were filming them.”

Although Bella’s character might be the one odd-one-out in the film, she is still a great person who’d be welcome into our family any day! I’ll have more on the family-ness of this film when I share my interview with director Miguel Arteta shortly.
