DCA’s Hyperion Theater will have new special effects for its “Frozen” stage musical
We’re just a few weeks away from the first curtain call of the new “Frozen” stage musical that’s coming to Disney California Adventure Park. While the story might be familiar, Disney Imagineers are touting that it will be a new, immersive experience thanks to its venue.
The Hyperion Theater, previously home to Disney’s hit Aladdin musical, is currently in the process of getting renovated and improved with new effects and technologies for the new show.
“While our production of “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” will stay true to the heart and soul of the film, we have adapted it for the stage so it’s truly a musical theatre production that befits our beautiful Hyperion Theater” said Dana Harrel, creative entertainment executive with Walt Disney Imagineering in a release. “The goal of this creative team is to take all audiences – including those that know the film, and those new to these characters – on this exciting and touching adventure with Anna and Elsa.
No concept art has been released, but the release did say that the theater will be “entirely wrapped” in the world of “Frozen” through “large set elements [that] will move the action in a cinematic way.” State-of-the-art projections and creative sound design will also be incorporated to help do just that. Other things like fabrics and specifically designed special effects will be used to push the storytelling and immersion even more.
And of course, there will be snow throughout the interior of the theater – on stage and over the audience.
Combine all that with a smart creative team and you have a musical adaptation that has a lot to do to earn the love of Disneyland-going, Aladdin-loving audiences.
The musical is set debut on May 27, 2016, just in time for Disneyland’s popular summer season.
