The Disney Movie Storybook (Con’t)

As was any indication with the release of “Saving Mr. Banks” last year and “Maleficent” this year, the movie makers at the Walt Disney Studios are taking inspiration for their new films from past films that made them famous in the first place.

That pattern of creating new stories with inspiration from old ones is something they are banking on well into the future with the announcements (and soon-to-be announcements) for their next set of live-action films.

Late last week, word got out that the Mouse’s movie masons would be creating a live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” as well as “The Jungle Book“. Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Twilight Saga) and Jon Favreau (Iron Man Trilogy, Elf), the respective directors, will join Sir Kenneth Branagh for the already announced live-action version of “Cinderella” due out next summer.

With such a famed and classical canon of storybook tales already told the Disney way, the strategy of looking back at some of those stories is certainly a wise move from the creative side of things, but only time (and the critics) will tell if that looking will turn into a “dream come true” at the box office.

And according to the recent box office numbers of Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of the the classical Disney villainess, those box office cash dreams do come true, too.
