Pixar Goes “Inside Out” With A Side Of “Lava” [UPDATED]

When we were first introduced to the first of the two Pixar films that will debut next year, we were immediately overcome with emotion, which was fitting because the film had to deal with emotion: personified!

In “Inside Out“, which we saw a concept scene of at last year’s D23 Expo, the filmmakers at Pixar had to reach deep into their minds to be able to come up with the concept of telling a story from within it. Now, that may seem confusing, but from what we saw, it proved to be very entertaining. In a nutshell, think of the film where your emotions (joy, sadness, anger, etc.) become living characters and your brain as a workplace where they live and work…working you! Specifically for the film, we dive not into our own minds, but into the mind of a young girl named Riley.

As we’ll find out when we watch the film, Riley is just like any other human being that has emotions that are dictated by the things that happen to us. With “Inside Out”, we’ll get to find out why we react the way we do thanks to the storytellers at Pixar. Here’s the full synopsis:

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).

The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

In addition to revealing details on “Inside Out”, Pixar also released details on their newest animated short film that will debut in front of “Inside Out” that we think will be one of their most unique animated shorts to date. Titled “Lava“, this animated short will be a “musical love story” that’ll take place over millions of years. We’ve also included the full, obviously short synopsis below:

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “Lava” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

“Inside Out” and “Lava” are set to debut on June 19, 2015.
