Disney loves sharing pieces of breaking news during its investor phone calls and today’s Q1 call had a big announcement regarding the already announced “Frozen” musical headed to Broadway.

Disney COO Tom Staggs announced that the highly anticipated musical based off the award-winning animated film and cultural phenomenon will debut in summer of 2017 with a pre-Broadway engagement in an “out-of-town” theater . It’ll then open at a to-be-announced theater on Broadway in spring 2018.

The musical will feature music and lyrics by creators of the film score and husband and wife team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and a book aka script by Jennifer Lee, the film’s screenwriter and director (with co-director Chris Buck). Two time Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, Wicked, The Book of Mormon) will serve as music supervisor and creates vocal and incidental arrangements. New music is expected to be written for the musical, too.

The creative team was announced today during the call and includes an all-star Broadway creative team. Golden Globe Award and Obie winner and two time Tony Award® nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Here Lies Love, Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle) will be Frozen’s director and Tony winner Peter Darling (Billy Elliot, Matilda) will be the choreographer.

The set design team that includes scenic and costume design will be done by seven time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, The Coast of Utopia, An American in Paris). Additionally, lighting design will be headed by five time Tony Award winner Natasha Kak (Aladdin, An American in Paris, The Glass Menagerie) and sound design by four time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski (The ScoLsboro Boys, Motown, After Midnight).

Casting and the Broadway play dates have yet to be announced through Disney Theatrical Productions. Be sure to sign up for the official newsletter on the official website for the latest information as its announced.

Disney California Adventure Park will be getting their own “Frozen” stage show this summer, but has been no news regarding if that show will be similar to the Broadway one.
