Disney wins big at this year’s Annie Awards

This past Saturday, UCLA’s Royce Hall played host to the animation industry’s biggest night – the Annie Awards. Although it is an awards show, it is still an intimate gathering of animators, voice actors, and other artists who honor each other’s works from the past year.

The 42nd iteration of the event saw Disney’s Mickey Mouse shorts take home a total of five awards in the animated TV/broadcast categories for best directing, writing, music, editorial, and voice acting for Bill Farmer as Goofy and Grandma. Mickey Shorts also won for best production design, Disney Channel’s Gravity Falls took home the best production for a children’s audience, and the Channel’s series Wander Over Yonder won best character design, bringing Disney Television Animation’s total wins to eight.

Walt Disney Animation Studios also won two awards for Feast as the best animated short subject and for Big Hero 6 as the best animated effects in animated production.

The show also featured some familiar faces who presented awards like Ryan Potter (voice of Hiro Hamada in BH6) and Disney Legend Richard Sherman.

In addition to the year-to-year achievement awards, the lifetime achievement Winsor McCay award was given to Don Lusk (Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians) to recognize his contributions to the world of animation. The Special Achievement Award was given to The Walt Disney Family Museum for their outstanding work preserving and presenting Walt Disney’s legacy of animation, as well as promoting its continued use today.
