Disney’s studios films should be nominated for more Writers Guild Awards

Last night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, the Writers Guild of America (West) held it’s annual awards ceremony honoring the past year’s achievements in screenwriting. Nominated writers range from different projects including movies, TV, and even video games.

You’d assume that Disney’s entertainment products would be nominated for many WGAs for its stories, but you’d be wrong. This year’s nominees, including those from ABC’s shows, only totaled six. Two of those nominations were for “Star Wars Rebels” and the new series “Elena of Avalor”. None of them were for Disney’s feature films. Snubbed, you say?

Arguably, Disney’s movies are the most important in the company’s business as they are the core creative content that its other products are based off of. And central to Disney’s movies are the writers and their stories. This year wasn’t the only year that Disney’s films weren’t considered for the WGAs. The last feature film to be nominated was Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2015.

Here’s hoping that Disney’s movies like “Moana” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which critics and audiences raved to have great stories, are nominated for awards next year!
