“Everything is awesome” when you have the directors of ‘The LEGO Movie’ direct a Star Wars movie

A good story can come from anywhere and that couldn’t be more evident enough with today’s announcement of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord becoming directors of the next Star Wars’ anthology film about Han Solo’s origins.

Though you may not know their names, you do know their previous works that include the most recent 21 Jump Street series, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs series, and The LEGO Movie. With all these films being funny-centered, what place do these guys have in creating a Star Wars spinoff film based off one of the franchises’ iconic stars?

“A fresh new dimension,” says Lawrence Kasdan (who is a Star Wars veteran writer who had a big hand in Ep. 7 : The Force Awakens). He and his son Jon Kasdan will write the screenplay for Miller and Lord’s film. “They’re (Miller and Lord) two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

People like the Kasdans aren’t the only one putting a lot of hope in the directing duo. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who will also produce the film, believes in this creative team’s capabilities. “It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task,” she said. “Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

The creatives themselves aren’t the only ones who are excited for what’s to come either. Many fans are already elated in knowing who’ll be leading what might be the most already anticipated Star Wars film since the first ones.

As for who’ll play the young Han Solo, it’s still up in the air. No casting news was given with today’s announcement, but Miller and Lord are promising to keep the culture of the beloved franchise and tell a out-of-this world story. “This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” they said. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us.”

We’ll see if their risks were worth it when the film releases in theaters on May 25, 2018.
