Here’s the song that Julie Andrews insisted to be cut from “Mary Poppins”.
Richard Sherman has certainly been in the spotlight a lot recently. His unending love for music and writing some of that music has led him to some incredible opportunities, like most recently writing the emotional music that bids you well after Disneyland’s 60th anniversary fireworks spectacular.
By far one of his most one-of-a-kind opportunities was the opportunity to work with Walt Disney himself! I know that you likely already know this and many more of Sherman and his late brother Robert’s achievements for The Walt Disney Company. At the same time, you probably don’t know every little experience that Sherman has had!
I recently came to accepting that fact myself when I saw a video posted by our friends at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences aka the folks who put on the Oscars.
They’ve been releasing new videos as part of their original web series called Academy Originals, where they interview some of the more popular and even lesser known talents who’ve help shape film.
This past Monday’s new video featured Sherman detailing working with Walt and making music for their first big Disney project: Mary Poppins. According to Sherman in the video, he had one such occasion where he had to play the music from the film that Julie Andrews ultimately had to sing. There’s one song “that she felt wasn’t quite right for Mary Poppins. That song was called “Through the Eyes of Love”.

“It was a key song,” Sherman said in the Academy video. “But she wanted something with more pizzazz.” Sherman and his brother answered that request with one of the most memorable songs in the film “Spoonful of Sugar”!
Be sure to watch the full Academy video in the player above to learn how they came up with that song and to enjoy the storytelling company that is Disney Legend Richard Sherman, a true original.
