High School Musical 4 is happening

It’s the start of something new again!

Disney Channel announces today that they have began casting for High School Musical 4. After airing its recent 10-year reunion, the Disney Channel Original Movie will continue by introducing new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.

High School Musical is part of Disney Channel’s DNA,” says Disney Channel President Gary Marsh, “it embodies all that we stand for. As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we’re excited to announce ‘the start of something new’ —as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the ‘High School Musical’ franchise.”

Jeffrey Hornaday (Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie and Teen Beach 2) will direct and choreograph the movie, and Dan Berendsen (Freeform’s Baby Daddy and Hannah Montana: The Movie) and Peter Barsocchini (writer of all three High School Musical movies) will write the script for the fourth installment.

High School Musical premiered on January 20, 2006 and reached its highest ratings for any telecast ever on Disney Channel with 7.7 million total viewers in the U.S. It received many awards including two Emmy Awards, Billboard Music Award for Soundtrack of the Year, an American Music Award and more. Perhaps most notable is the way the series continues to maintain a large fanbase, attracting thousands of views for its ten-year reunion special.

Currently there’s no word either on the fourth film’s air date, or whether the original cast will make an appearance, but Disney Channel does have an audition website that will supposedly be updating information on the film.

Check it out for yourself – maybe you’ll be the next wildcat!
