How do Imagineers create “worlds” at Disney’s theme parks? Like this.

One of the more interesting panels at this year’s D23 Expo was one called “Immersive Worlds: Bringing Stories to Life at Disney Parks.” It featured some of Imagineering’s top creative leaders to describe what it’s like to create some of the theme park experiences that are inspired by movies and real-life.

Scott Trowbridge, fresh off the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, as well as Joe Rhode, creative leader for Aulani: A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii were part of the panel that was way more philosophical than I’m sure people attending were expecting to get.

Instead of showing a step-by-step process of how they create large-scale lands with flashy behind-the-scenes pictures and videos of their projects, these Imagineers had an in-depth chat that revealed a lot of their thinking behind the things they create.

“The roots of Disneyland are connected to worlds. We need to be making large spaces where people can find themselves in besides their own,” said Trowbridge.
