How to survive Disneyland on your period
In celebration of International Women’s Day, it’s only fitting to discuss a topic that we females are quite familiar with — periods. They are a natural part of life that millions of women around the world experience every single day. However, it’s a “taboo” subject that isn’t freely talked about in public among women and especially men. Women and girls should feel empowered and not shameful about being on that “time of the month.”
Several years ago, I was in the restroom stall in Fantasyland where I overheard a little girl next to me screaming in shock. She had gotten her period for the first time ever. I wished I was in the right mindset to help her at the time, but I was too afraid to come forward.
After some thought, the topic of periods are absolutely nothing to be scared or embarrassed about. Despite its bloody nuisance, having a period is a sign of having a healthy and functioning body – who wouldn’t want that?! I’d like to take this as an opportunity to shed some light on this matter, and help others be educated on this “unspoken” subject. Yes, I’m looking at all of you men out there as well. Who knows, you could be of great help to your friend, girlfriend, wife, and future daughter one day — even if it happens to be a day at the parks.
Don’t let your period stop you from having a great time at Disneyland. In fact, here are 10 things to keep in mind to make your experience a little more bearable.
1. Come Prepared
Bring extra clothes (i.e. sweater, pants, underwear)
Feminine products
Pain relief medication
Snacks & other necessities. Click HERE to see what I carry in my bag.
2. Dress Appropriately
Wear loose clothing
Flannel top and/or sweater (to tie around the waist in case of an “accident”)
Dark bottoms; nothing too tight around the waist
3. Stay Hydrated
4. Have a healthy snack…
5. …but eat what you crave (in moderation)
6. Engage in physical activity to minimize cramps and discomfort
7. Avoid these attractions, especially ones with long wait-times
8. Find ways to relieve stress
Watch your favorite shows
Scream your lungs out
Have a friendly competition with a buddy
Draw & listen to music at the Disney Animation Building
Hug it out with your favorite Disney character
9. Take a rest
Sleepy? Here are some spots to take a nap at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Remember to take restroom breaks to “freshen up.”
10. Be Aware
Didn’t come prepared? No problem! Feminine products are available for purchase at merchandise counters and bathroom dispensers within the park.
Pain relief medication can be purchased at merchandise counters and First Aid.
Complimentary pads and tampons can be found in bathroom dispensers at the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel.
