If Disney characters read poetry, this is probably what they’d read [Happy National Poetry Month!]

April is National Poetry Month in the United States and that got me thinking – what kind of poems would Disney characters like?

Many Disney characters are already poetic, so it wouldn’t surprise me that some of them would turn to poetry if it existed in their worlds.

Below you’ll find some suggestions as to what poems some Disney characters might like. We were only able to include a few of the princesses, but if you have a request let us know in the comments and we’ll try to find a poem for you!

Aurora – “Sonnet 43” by Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s sonnet talks about looking forward to sleep because it’ll let him dream of his love – Aurora probably would have said the same of Prince Phillip!

“I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream.”

“All days are nights to see till I see thee / And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.”

Ariel – “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou

“Caged Bird” is about a bird who longs for freedom, but is constrained by the forces around her. Ariel’s situation is almost exactly the same, and while she longs to walk rather than to fly, she could probably relate really well to Maya Angelou’s poem.

“wish I could be / part of that world.”

“the caged bird / sings of freedom.”

Belle – “Christabel” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The main character of this poem is adventurous, innocent, loved by her father, and, to top it off, is named Christabel. There are many similarities between her and Belle, but maybe the best one is that “Christabel” is actually unfinished – much like how Belle sees her life as unfinished without adventure.

“I want adventure in the great wide somewhere / I want it more than I can tell.”

“The lovely lady, Christabel / Whom her father loves so well / What makes her in the wood so late / A furlong from the castle gate?”

Anna and Elsa – “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti

“Goblin Market” tells the story of two sisters, one of whom is tricked by some goblins and falls into a scary sickness that can only be cured by her sister. While in Frozen the sickness is more like a power and the goblins are actually really nice trolls, the movie’s messages are almost exactly the same as the poem’s!

“An act of true love will thaw a frozen heart.”

“there is no friend like a sister / In calm or stormy weather / To cheer one on the tedious way / To fetch one if one goes astray.”

Bonus: Gaston – “Don Juan” by Lord Byron

So Don Juan’s a little nicer than Gaston, but I sincerely believe that if Gaston were to read anything, he’d probably be using Lord Byron’s poetry on all the ladies.

“No one says no to Gaston!”

“He thought about himself, and the whole earth / of man the wonderful, and of the stars.”
