It has been six years since “Frozen,” so here are six facts about “Frozen 2”

While it has been just a few years since we last saw Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, it has been six years since we saw them in a feature animated film.

2019 is bringing a nice thaw on that freeze as the long awaited sequel to the blockbuster Disney animated film will hit theaters this fall. There’s a few more months until then, but we were invited to the Walt Disney Animation Studios a few weeks ago to get a first look at the film with the directors and animators.

We’ll have a future feature on some behind-the-scenes looks at the film, but for now, we wanted to prime you with what you need to know about “Frozen 2.”

1) It was a film 4 years in the making

“We finally had a break from our own ‘Frozen’ fever in early 2016,” said producer Peter Del Vecho. “It wasn’t until September 2016 when we took our research trip to the Nordic region that we began to think about what was next for the Arendelle group.”

2) The sequel film answers one central question

Co-director Chris Buck said, ”During the first film’s press tour, I recall getting asked the same question over and over again: how did Elsa get her powers? And so, we wanted to know ourselves.”

3) There are 7 new original songs

”It didn’t take that much coaxing for us to get the original voice talent back for this one. It was pretty easy for us to get the songwriters, too!,” said co-director and writer Jennifer Lee. Bobby and Kristen-Anderson Lopez are back with songs like “When I Am Older” and “Into The Unknown.”

4) It all takes place in relation to the original film (and not the shorts or TV specials)

Specifically, the setting of “Frozen 2” is Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest. Timeline places the events three years after the events of “Frozen.”

5) There are more connections to the Norwegian culture in the sequel

The research trip that the filmmakers took brought back loads of information about the Norse region from the vegetation, weather, landscape, and most importantly – the culture – and more specifically, the stories.

Lee shared that a lot of “Frozen 2’s” story was inspired by Norse myths including their characters and plot lines.

6) What made “Frozen” great will make “Frozen 2” great

Lee continued, “I think a lot of people enjoyed the first film because we took traditional character tropes e.g. having a man save the princess and flipping them on their heads. I’m excited that we get do more of that while still telling a gratifying and engaging story in this one.”
