Learn more about Disney’s streaming service is coming to a screen near you in late 2019
More and more families and individuals are choosing online streaming services rather than cable TV, and The Walt Disney Company is paying attention. In anticipation of this upcoming change in the way we get our entertainment, the company has been moving much of its media online. One element of this strategy includes a brand new streaming service similar to Netflix that, for now, is being affectionately called ‘Disneyflix’.
We know that this streaming service is planned to be released in late 2019, though we don’t know the price, the strategy or even what it will be called. However, under the leadership of Disney executive (and former head of marketing for the Walt Disney Studios) Ricky Strauss, the platform is sure to be worth waiting for. Strauss’ successes as president of marketing for The Walt Disney Studios include “Black Panther,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Inside Out.”
“I do believe that this is the future, which is one reason I wanted the job,” Strauss told The New York Times.
Though we don’t know much about ‘Disneyflix’ itself, we have gotten hints about what content we may see from the same article:
A Star Wars series from Jon Favreau (“Iron Man” and “The Jungle Book,)
Live action remakes of “Lady and the Tramp” and “The Sword in the Stone”
A remake “Three Men and a Baby,”
Adaptations of “Timmy Failure,” “The Paper Magician,” “Stargirl” and “Don Quixote”
Original films “Togo,” a period piece about a sled dog, and “Noelle,” a film about Santa’s daughter starring Anna Kendrick
Episodic spinoffs from Disney franchises like “High School Musical,” “Monsters Inc.” and The Muppets
Altogether, Disney intends to spend about $13 billion on original programming in alone to prep for the launch next year.
Disney’s partnership with Netflix will cease starting with Captain Marvel, and all following movies will be streamed on this new Disney platform exclusively – making the streaming service even more attractive to consumers.
That, on top of the rumored “lower-than-Netflix” price point for the monthly service, and you have something that Bob Iger is counting on the service to be irresistible as it is Disney’s future and hopefully your future hub of Disney screened entertainment.
