Meet the director of the MCU’s first Asian-led film
Marvel Studios announced that it has found a director for its first-ever Asian-led film that is part of the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU).
Destin Daniel Cretton himself is of Asian-descent and has worked on mostly indie-films, but is currently working on projects with Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther). The film he’ll be directing for Marvel will be the first film with an Asian lead.
Shang-Chi is a character that appeared in Marvel’s comics back in 1970s who was trained to be a martial arts assassin by his father, but later became a hero after rejecting his father’s ways. No news has been released on who will be cast as Shang-Chi, but expect that person to be Asian, too.
The origin story film will be released as part of “Phase Four,” the next set of MCU films under the Disney banner after “Avengers: Endgame” between 2020 and 2022.
