“Well, well…” So-So? : a review of Disney’s “Maleficent”

The Walt Disney Company loves the idea of a story.

We see that in everything they create today, but more prominently in what brought them to world acclaim in the first place: the animated classic films created under the supervision of Walt Disney himself. One of those films was “Sleeping Beauty” and now 55 years later, we revisit the classic tale and examine it under a new, darker light.

Following the pattern of looking back to their successful past like what they did last year for “Saving Mr. Banks“, the Walt Disney Studios has created a new film that carried inspiration from a past film they created. “Maleficent” will tell the tale of the evil Disney queen and how she came to be…but will that be it?

Ever since the film was first announced and the marketing for the film has made its rounds, all signs pointed to the fact the film would follow the classic tale of Aurora and her trials with Maleficent, but we propose that might not just be entirely the case. Although inspiration from the past helped guide this film (especially with the stunning transformation of Angelina Jolie into the villainess), that inspiration doesn’t mean you’ll be met with the same tale today and that might mean good or bad for different people.
