Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” is tanking.

Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” hasn’t even been out for three weeks and film business analysts are already calling the film the studio’s first major flop.

The Disney-owned studio seemed to have been immune to creating films that resonated with audiences, resulting in big box office numbers. The dinosaur film, which is Pixar’s 16th, might have broken the hit streak with the reporting of the box office numbers.

With a reported production budget of $200 million and an additional $150 million spent on marketing the film, the math shows that the film must make $500 million to break even. According to Variety, the film has only made $131.1 million globally and is showing slowing ticket sales already.

These negative effects may be in part due to the lackluster story that came from a very difficult and elongated production process. If you recall, the film ousted its original director and had its original release date pushed back to rework the story entirely. Additionally, the original voice cast that included big names like Neil Patrick Harris were never included in the film with no reason given.

While hopes were high through the publicity circuit, it couldn’t hide the effects of the ill-fated film. While family audiences seem to have resonated with it being a “kid film”, critical audiences have cited that the animation is much more entertaining than the story; leaving all other aged audiences displeased.

Disney is still confident that the film will reach its break even amount at the box office during the Christmas holiday. Ticket sales, combined with the unreported sales from the film’s consumer products items and future Blu-ray/DVD purchases, could save the film from even more of a catastrophe equal to a dinosaur extinction in the movie business.
