Pixar’s “Day” Is Dead.

As we wrote about a few months ago, Disney*Pixar has a slate of films that we’re very excited about including one centered around the Mexican cultural holiday called Día De Los Muertos (or Day of the Dead).

Although the title of the film had yet to be announced, a filing made a few weeks ago by a Disney attorney at the US Trademark and Patent Office showed that the film was most likely going to be called the same name or something similar to the name of the holiday the film is centered around.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that both Mexicans and even other peoples of different cultures didn’t take the action so nicely citing that Dia de los Muertos was a part of ones culture, not something that should be a money-maker.

Long story short, Disney eventually took back their application with the following statement:

As we have previously announced, Disney-Pixar is developing an animated feature inspired by the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Disney’s trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities. It has since been determined that the title of the film will change and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing.

So the film might not be called “Día de los Muertos,” but we have a feeling that Disney will come up with something more creative (and alive).
