Prepare to Dazzle Your Sweet Tooth!
In honor of Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary, guests can enjoy special foods, drinks, and sweets at the parks. Speaking of sweets, for all the chocolate lovers out there, here’s a treat for you! The Disneyland Resort is now offering Diamond Celebration Truffles at select restaurants, including the Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, and Steakhouse 55. A few of our team members joined me as I tasted these chocolates and together we discussed the taste, presentation, and overall opinions on each piece.
The box was a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be, but I wasn’t going to jump to any conclusions. There are four truffles per box, and depending on where you get your box from, the flavors vary, so there are many different ones to try!
Before purchasing the truffles, there are a couple of important things to know. First, you must be 21 years or older to purchase these because some of them contain alcohol. Second, each box is $16.99 (NOTE: there is NO Annual Passholder discount). Although some of them are non-alcoholic, I wouldn’t recommend getting these for the kids. After all, there are many other delicious Diamond Celebration treats to choose from that are more kid-friendly!
After a long taste test and much deliberation, here’s what we thought of each chocolate:
Blue Bayou Restaurant (Disneyland)
Crème Brulee Truffle (non-alcoholic)Ingredients: Crème, Brown Sugar, VanillaTo be honest, all I could taste was pure chocolate and caramel with a little hint of nut. It wasn’t bad, but I was a little underwhelmed that it didn’t really taste like crème brulee.
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs up!
Bananas Foster Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Banana, Vanilla Ice Cream, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, Dark RumI could immediately taste the banana, but it wasn’t overpowering. It had the perfect amount of sweetness. If you’ve ever had a chocolate-covered banana, that’s pretty much what it tasted like. Even though there was alcohol in this one, I couldn’t taste it. This one was definitely one of my favorites!
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs up!
King Cake Truffle (non-alcoholic)Ingredients: Confection Sugar, Lemon JuiceWhen I saw the colorful sprinkles on the King Cake truffle, I knew it was going to be sweet. Chocolate is already sweet enough as it is, but add cake to that and it’s sweetness overload! I was a little surprised to see lemon juice listed, but I couldn’t taste it at all. This one takes the “cake” for sweetest truffle. However, if you love funfetti cake, then this is the truffle for you!
Thumbs up or down: Neither, it was okay.
Mint Julep Truffle (non-alcoholic)Ingredients: Sugar, Lime Juice, Lemon Juice, Crème de MentheThis one was garnished with some green sprinkles and green icing and looked very decadent. Unlike the other truffles, which had fudge chocolate fillings, this one had a white cream filling. It sort of had a crunch to it, but the texture was great. I love Andes mints and that’s exactly what it tasted like – the Mint Julep aftertaste left my taste buds feeling fresh! Definitely my favorite truffle of them all!
Thumbs up or down: Two thumbs up!
Final Verdict for Blue Bayou Restaurant: This box wasn’t bad! While a couple of them were underwhelming, the Mint Julep won me over. I’d give it 3.5 stars out of 4.
Carthay Circle Restaurant (Disney California Adventure)
Carthay Manhattan Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, Angostura Bitters, Luxardo Maraschino Cherries, VanillaOkay, first off, I’d never even heard of most of these ingredients so I didn’t know what to expect. This one contained alcohol and I could definitely smell it, but I couldn’t really taste it, so the chocolate masked the flavor pretty well. When I tried this truffle, I thought I was going to get an overwhelming taste of cherry, but it wasn’t bad. There was a perfect balance between the chocolate and cherry flavors.
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs up!
Brown Derby Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Bourbon, Grapefruit Juice, HoneyWhat an interesting name for a truffle, and interesting is how I would describe the flavor as well. When I first tried this one, there was only one description that came to mind: it tasted like the citrus scent in “Soarin’ Over California” at Disney California Adventure. Unlike the other truffles that were covered in regular chocolate, this one was covered in white chocolate. I’m not a huge fan of white chocolate, so I didn’t particularly enjoy this one, however, it wasn’t bad! This truffle was different and unique compared to most chocolates out there.
Thumbs up or down: Neither, it was okay
B52 Coffee Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Grand Marnier, Kahlua, Irish Whipped CreamThis one tasted like dark chocolate with a hint of alcohol and coffee. Even though I don’t like coffee, from a non-coffee-lover’s opinion, it wasn’t bad. However, if you love coffee, you might find this one up to par.
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs down
Hazelnut Tiramisu Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Classic Tiramisu, HazelnutThis one was sweet and there was a tiny hint of caramel and toffee flavors, but it didn’t really taste like tiramisu to me. The texture was smooth. This one wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t amazing.
Thumbs up or down: Neither, it was okay
Final Verdict for Carthay Circle Restaurant Truffles: I wasn’t a huge fan of this box, to be honest. They weren’t terrible, but they didn’t taste as good as the truffles from Blue Bayou. I’d give this a 3 out of 4 stars.
Steakhouse 55 Restaurant (Disneyland Hotel)
Kahlua Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Coffee, Brown Sugar, VanillaFirst up from Steakhouse 55 is the Kahlua Truffle. The strong yet sweet aroma had me thinking this one was going to be super rich, but it actually wasn’t – I couldn’t taste the Kahlua. This one was a little on the underwhelming side. It wasn’t terrible, but I wasn’t amazed.
Thumbs up or down: Neither, it was okay
Primitivo Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Fruit Flavors, Raspberry, Blackberry, Cherry, Plum, RaisinWhen I saw the ingredients for this one, I wasn’t sure what it was going to taste like, but I knew it was going to be fruity. It sort of tasted like a chocolate-covered raisin, but the fruit flavors were not overpowering. There was a slight hint of alcohol, but there was a nice balance with the chocolate and fruit flavors.
Thumbs up or down: Neither, it was okay
24 Layer Chocolate Cake Truffle (non-alcoholic)Ingredients: Milk Chocolate, Hazelnut, Hint of VanillaThis one looked almost identical to the Carthay Manhattan Truffle. The hint of magenta coloring on the outside shell made for some nice aesthetics. To me, this one tasted like a chocolate donut. The vanilla flavoring complemented the chocolate, but I couldn’t really taste the hazelnut. This one was one of my favorites for sure.
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs up!
Cosmopolitan Truffle (alcoholic)Ingredients: Vodka, Triplesec, Cranberry Juice, LimeOn the outside, this one was aesthetically pleasing as well. The outside shell consisted of white chocolate, garnished with a hint of magenta coloring. I immediately tasted the lime and it sort of reminded me of the Brown Derby Truffle, but not as “citrus-y”. This one ties with the 24 Layer Cake Truffle for this group in my opinion.
Thumbs up or down: Thumbs up!
Final Verdict for Steakhouse 55 Restaurant Truffles: Overall, these truffles were good! They weren’t too sweet and there was a variety of flavors. While I was left feelings a bit underwhelmed by the Kahlua and Primitivo truffles, the 24 Layer Chocolate Cake and Cosmopolitan truffles satisfied my sweet tooth and I would eat them again! I would give this box 3 out of 4 stars.
Overall Verdict (1 = “best” and 3 = “worst”):Presentation:1. Carthay Circle Restaurant2. Blue Bayou Restaurant3. Steakhouse 55
