Ranking all the Disney movies that came out in 2016
Disney movies have had a great year! Hits like “Zootopia”, “Moana”, and Rogue One” are already being praised as great additions to the Disney canon.
The twelve movies released this year, however, aren’t all created equal, and we’re taking the time today to recognize how these movies differ. While everyone’s opinion varies, we’re basing this list on our writers’ reviews, Rotten Tomatoes‘ Tomatometer, and of course, personal opinion.
12. Alice Through the Looking Glass
While Alice in Wonderland has been a popular franchise for years, 2016’s addition didn’t do so well. With a pretty low rating from all around, it’s safe to say that this movie is best for dedicated fans rather than general viewers.
Our Rating: 3/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 30%
11. The Finest Hours
We rated this movie pretty high, but other viewers didn’t like it too much. It’s low on this list for being so divisive in terms of personal opinion!
Our Rating: 4.7/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 63%
10. The BFG
The BFG is a whimsical, fun little tale that will definitely make any Roald Dahl fan happy.
Our Rating: 4/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 75%
9. Pete’s Dragon
2016’s Pete’s Dragon took the animated film in a completely different direction, which some people enjoyed and others didn’t. It’s worth a watch, especially for fans of the older film, but overall is a pretty simple movie.
Our Rating: 3.5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 86%
8. Captain America: Civil War
At this point in the list the rankings get a bit hazy, but up next we have “Captain America: Civil War” – the movie tries to break through the Marvel mold, and does so to an extent by focusing on many characters rather than just Captain America. It was a good strategy, and points to exciting possibilities in future Marvel movies!
Our Rating: 4/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 90%
7. The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book was a truly amazing movie, not only for the way the story retells a classic, but also for the fact that most of the movie was done in CG. The film is incredible to watch in its final cut, and the talent of many great celebrities is an added bonus!
Our Rating: 4.5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 94%
6. Doctor Strange
“Doctor Strange” did a great job with humor and characterization, even going a little past “Civil War” in some aspects by introducing non-traditional elements. The movie did provoke much controversy, but also gained high reviews.
Our Rating: 4.5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 90%
5. Finding Dory
While “Finding Dory” might not live up to the level of “Finding Nemo,” it still did a good job telling its own story. The emotional moments of the film were very touching, and who can resist baby Dory?!
Our Rating: 4/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 94%
4. Queen of Katwe
“Queen of Katwe” may seem like a random choice so close to the top of the list, but it’s ranked high because it’s so unexpected. The film appears to be a simple story about chess, yet really packs a powerful punch emotionally and culturally. It’s a wonderful film for all ages – and it’s based on a true story!
Our Rating: 4.5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 92%
3. Moana
We cannot deny Moana’s success – though many doubted its success before its release, many are already singing its praises and its catchy songs long after they leave the movie theater. It’s a must-see for any Disney fan!
Our Rating: 4.5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 95%
2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” just came out, but is already making a big impact on Star Wars fans and casual viewers alike. It’s still in theaters now, and is definitely worth the movie ticket!
Our Rating: 4.8/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 85%
1. Zootopia
At number one we have Zootopia, which may very well be one of the best films Disney has created in the past few years. With an original story, charming characters, and a fresh take on animated films, Zootopia breaks barriers in a positive way, making it first on our list.
Our Rating: 5/5
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer: 98%
