Rogers: The Musical as seen in “Hawkeye” is real. Here’s how it happened.

Part of the intrigue that came for “Hawkeye,” the newest Marvel Studios TV series that is now streaming on Disney+ was the quick glimpses of what appeared to be a stage musical about The Avengers.

Well, if you haven’t seen the first episode of the series yet, you’ll still be glad to know that what you only saw seconds of in the trailers is actually a whole segment complete with a full set, actors, swings, and even a full song!

So why was an Avengers musical, aptly named “Rogers: The Musical,” created? Apparently as a joke.

“We needed to find a convincing reason why Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) would come back to New York City after the traumatic events of Endgame,” said Marvel Studios president and series executive producer Kevin Feige. “So director Rhys Thomas (pitched the idea of a Captain America musical because it’s so New York.”

While it was a joke at first, it over time became the real reason why Hawkeye along with his kids decided to come to New York again – to just have a great time over the Christmas holiday together as a family.

‘Having a great time’ was what famed composer Marc Shaiman (“The American President”, “Mary Poppins Returns”) had when he was tapped, along with colleague Scott Wittman, to write the song-and-dance number for the now very real musical.

Thomas added, “It also helped that Marc’s husband was a big MCU fan too.”

Even the song’s catchy refrain is very much in canon with the Marvel Cinematic Universe up until that point, saying:

“Avengers unite/’cause we’ve got to hear you say/”I could do this all – day!,” calling back to one of Captain America’s iconic catchphrases.

Together with the full song, appropriate set design of NYC, and actors who sing and dance, you’ve got Rogers: The Musical that you’ll wish existed in full in real life!

You can, however, listen to the full song on your favorite streaming platforms right now.

Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” is now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Our special thanks to Kevin Feige and Rhys Thomas for contributing to this story!
