Star Wars: Episode 8 started filming today. See the first footage.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced that the next film in the new saga has begun filming today. Director and writer Rian Johnson (“Looper”) and some of the ensemble cast returned to Pinewood Studios in London to shoot the first scenes of the currently untitled Episode 8.

While much of the film is still completely under wraps (and will be like The Force Awakens until its release), filmmakers did announce a few new details including which cast members will be returning, as well as some of the “talented newcomers”.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis will all be returning to reprise their roles on the Light and Dark sides. The new cast members include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran. Their characters have not been disclosed.

Many of the award-winning support teams will return to help create the Star Wars universe visually as well including leads Pippa Anderson (Co-Producer, VP Post Production), Neal Scanlan (Creature & Droid FX Creative Supervisor), and Chris Corbould (SFX Supervisor).

To tease the announcement even more, the first footage of the movie featuring Luke Skywalker and Rey where we left them on that deserted island. Don’t get your hopes up though, it’s just a tease after all.

You’ll have to wait until December 15, 2017 to see how their encounter will continue!
