“The Last Jedi” documentary will probably make you rethink your disliking for the movie

Earlier this week, Lucasfilm released “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” for Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. As always, the full movie with digital code for the digital/Movies Anywhere copy is included, but something that isn’t arguably the reason why one would pick up a copy.

Located inside the second disk of the combo pack is the bonus CD that contains deleted scenes and more importantly, the feature-length documentary on the making of the film. It’s called “The Director and the Jedi” and contains over one hour inside look of the entire multi-month process of making the second to last film in the original Skywalker Saga.

The director the title is referring to is, of course, Rian Johnson, the ultra-Star Wars fan who was chosen by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy to write and direct the film. Much to the surprise of many, other ultra-fans of Star Wars felt Johnson’s take on how it all should continue and end was not to their liking. Many reasons were cited, including that Luke Skywalker wasn’t meant to be grumpy and mean-spirited.

While Luke himself, Mark Hamill, also agreed that his character wasn’t mean to be that way, he admitted that it wasn’t his character alone. “While I told Rian (Johnson) about my grievances, I just carried on and did what he told me to do. I trust him,” he said in the documentary.

It’s that trust that takes center stage throughout the bonus documentary, where every aspect of the film from building the sets and creatures to shooting the film with the actors was all done through the lens of Johnson and the team trusting his vision.

If you didn’t enjoy “The Last Jedi” for whatever reason, I’d highly recommend watching this documentary. It might change the way you look at Rian Johnson’s Star Wars film for the better.
