Sweeten up Mother’s Day with this delicious Tarzan and Kala-inspired banana pudding
Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday and it is probably daunting to figure out how to treat your mom when she does so much for you. Presents don’t seem to be enough sometimes.
If you are feeling lost and unsure of what to do for her, think about making some kind of sweet treat for your mom to show her just how much you love her!
Banana Pudding
This banana pudding is inspired by the 1999 animated film Tarzan, where a young Tarzan is rescued by gorillas and raised by his loving mother, Kala. For a mother like Kala, this banana pudding with a light flavor can easily warm the heart.
This dessert can be made two ways: topped with either a simple whipped topping or a hand-torched meringue. Scroll below to see which option you think will be best for your mother’s day gift!
Ingredients and tools:
2 large semi-ripe or ripe bananas
1 box of JELL-O Banana Cream Flavor Instant Pudding
2 – 2 1/2 cups milk
1 box of Nilla brand vanilla wafers
**Cool Whip
Directions:
Make your banana pudding using either a hand mixer or a whisk*.
Pour the banana pudding packet into the bowl and add the milk.
Set the hand mixer to the lowest speed and mix the pudding for 1 minute.
*If you are using a whisk, mix for 2 minutes and let it sit for 5 minutes until it is not runny.
Set pudding aside while assembling the dessert.
Assemble the dessert:
Line the bottom and sides of the pan with the vanilla wafers as evenly as possible.
Cut one banana into slices and place on top of the vanilla wafer layer.
Place a second layer of vanilla wafers on top of the bananas.
Cut up the remaining banana on top of the final vanilla wafer layer.
Pour banana pudding mixture onto the bananas and vanilla wafers, spreading the pudding evenly across the top to cover the entire pan.
Option 1: Whipped topping
Top banana pudding with cool whip and crumbled vanilla wafers.
Refrigerate for 24 hours to set.
Enjoy!
Option 2: Meringue
Ingredients and tools:
Egg whites from 2 large eggs
Sugar
*Creme of Tartar
Directions:
Using a hand mixer, whip the egg whites at medium speed. Constantly move the bowl to mix the eggs evenly.
Add sugar gradually to the egg whites and continue beating the mixture until white and fluffy. The meringue will be ready when it can stay on a spoon without falling off.
*If you find that your meringue is not getting stiff, add 1/4 teaspoon of creme of tartar to the egg whites and sugar.
Pour meringue on top of the banana pudding and spread evenly.
Curl the meringue into waves with a spatula or spoon until you reach a desired look.
Baking:
Option 1)
With your oven set to the highest temperature or “Broil,” place the banana pudding into the broiler in your oven.
Constantly rotate the pudding until the top is browned.
Refrigerate banana pudding for a day or until chilled and enjoy!
Option 2)
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Place banana pudding into oven until meringue browns.
Refrigerate banana pudding for a day or until chilled and enjoy!
Option 3)
Take the hand torch and brown and meringue until slightly toasted.
