The Disney-supported smart toy maker Sphero wants to put a robot in everyday places
You know that company that created the coolest BB-8 and Lightning McQueen smart toys? That company just started another company that wants to make more than smart toys. They want to make smart robots.
Sphero, the company that Disney accepted into their startup company incubator program was back in 2014, always had a knack for making these branded toys, but the heart of the company was their use of robotics to create an experience. Now the company is looking to go back to their roots and create an experience unlike any other, but has been dreamt up for generations.
Enter Misty Robotics, which Sphero announced today, will be rooted in their now spun off advanced robotics division. The company is heavily supported by an initial funding amount of $11.5 million and some of Sphero’s employees who’ve decided to carry out the new company’s mission.
That mission, according to a graphic from the announcement, was clear: “A Robot for every Home and Office.” That statement was also accompanied by a teaser of what is believed to be a teaser of what these robots will look like. How they function and how they will serve the needs of a home and office are unclear, though the announcement did say that the robots are being designed to be “seen and treated as our friends, our teammates, and a part of our families,” and will perform “helpful tasks” as well as “interacting with humans in entertaining and friendly ways.”
It won’t be long before we see if Misty Robotics can awe the world like they their parent company did with BB-8 and Lightning McQueen. Their first robot is set to debut sometime next year.
