The Disney version of the popular mobile game Crossy Road just dropped
If you know your mobile games, you probably know the game called Crossy Road. Developer by three friends over a few weeks, the Frogger-type game has already had millions of downloads and was recognized by Apple for its intuitive design. Disney seems to also be a fan of the game, so much so that they decided to team up with those creators to make a Disney version of the game.
Disney Crossy Road takes the game’s unique characteristics like its gameplay, environments, and characters and gives them the Disney treatment. Instead of a chicken, you’ll get to play as Mickey Mouse. Instead of a civilian road, you’ll have to cross over rows of stampeding animals near Pride Rock. Even the music and look retails the game’s classic 8-bit experience, making Disney look even more nostalgic than ever before.
So, how did the relatively new development company secure rights to use Disney’s IP in their hit game? The Hipster Whale team thought “nostalgically” and looked to Disney’s main flagship video game for their pitch to Disney. “Having multi-franchise games here at Disney is actually really challenging,” says Travis Marshall, a producer at Disney in a story from The Verge.
“You have different artistic styles, sometimes we don’t want the worlds to mix. But Infinity definitely paved the way for people to understand that there are ways to accomplish these universes coming together into one game, but still keeping each franchise true to itself.”
Many of those franchises across Disney’s businesses are represented in Disney Crossy Road too, including Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion to Pixar’s Inside Out – each one having detailed elements to the gameplay that any Disney fan would instantly recognize.
Disney Crossy Road is available now for free on Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play Store.
