The untold story of how we reunited the ENTIRE cast of Disney’s “A Goofy Movie”.

I had the chance to finally go through all the pictures, videos, and press releases that were shared at the D23 Expo this past weekend. Beyond walking through the awesome pavilions and booths, I was most excited about one thing: “A Goofy Movie.”

Programming announcements for the Expo were given leading up to the first day of the show and I was surprised to see that Disney had planned to reunite the cast of the cult Disney animated classic for the first time in 20 years. It was oddly familiar to me because early last year, DisneyExaminer was looking to organize the same thing.

The movie’s 19th anniversary was upon us and many of us on staff knew it because we knew and loved the movie. After a few brainstorming sessions, we made a lot of phone calls and began conversations with the agents of Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy), Jason Marsden (the voice of Max), Jim Cummings (the voice of Pete), Kellie Martin (the voice of Roxanne), and Rob Paulsen (the voice of P.J.).

Though many of them originally were very interested in taking part in the goofy-numbered 19th anniversary celebration that we were planning, it seemed like it wasn’t meant to be as timing and logistics weren’t on our side. So, we stopped planning and scratched the idea.

Almost.

Aside from the main voice cast, we were also looking to bring in Tevin Campbell, the singing voice of Powerline in the film. We couldn’t find his agent or manager at first, but after some persistence in searching, we were able to find him and ultimately got to chat with Tevin himself. He was also enthusiastic about our plans, but timing and logistics were a problem yet again. So, we had to stop planning and almost scratched the idea again.

But not quite.

Fast forward to present day and the D23 Expo. As many of you know, we were planning our presence on the show floor and wanted to end each day of the Expo with a special VIP guest. Things began to quickly occur to me:

  • The planned panel for the “A Goofy Movie” reunion at the D23 Expo was really going to happen.

  • We wanted to bring in Tevin Campbell as our guest at our booth at the D23 Expo.

  • Disney didn’t have Tevin Campbell slated to appear at the reunion panel.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT.

It was clear to me that, in Hercules’ terms, that the stars were very much aligned for this to happen. After contacting Tevin’s manager again and connecting with the person organizing the reunion, we struck a deal allowing Tevin to appear and surprise Expo attendees with a live Powerline concert to close the panel presentation…

…and have the entire voice cast come down to our DisneyExaminer Newsroom!

The results are the two exclusive videos you can see below.

Fun fact: It was Tevin’s first public performance of Powerline’s song.

Fun fact: This was the only time that the voice cast made a public appearance together on the D23 Expo show floor. It was also Tevin’s first time meeting the rest of his fellow cast members and creatives since they all recorded separately!

It really was an amazing past few days at the D23 Expo, but it was made even more amazing knowing that we got to participate in making the Disney magic happen for so many fellow Disney fans and even the voice cast themselves.

There really is nobody else like these “goofy”, fun, and loving people.

Our heartfelt thanks to Tevin Campbell, Jymn Magon, Bill and Jennifer Farmer, Jason Marsden, and our very own Kacie Chow for helping organize this amazing lineup of talent.

The cast also was kind enough to sign both a movie poster and a DVD of “A Goofy Movie” and we’re giving it away as part of our DisneyExaminer Scavenger Hunt! Learn more by clicking HERE.
