There should and will be more Disney movie live concerts

Earlier this week, you probably saw your social media feeds filled with many posts like this:

They were all posts of “The Little Mermaid – Live In Concert”, a three-night event at the Hollywood Bowl that brought together some of Hollywood’s finest performing some of the world’s most popular Disney songs live to its animated film. They also included some of music from the popular Little Mermaid musical.

Sara Bareilles performed as Ariel, Darren Criss as Prince Eric, Rebel Wilson played Ursula, Tituss Burgess performed as Sebastian, Norm Lewis as King Triton, and John Stamos played Chef Louis. The incredible Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra provided their instrumentals. For the last concert this past Monday, Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, reprised her role to the delight of everyone who attended.

And everyone did attend – Disney fans, Broadway fans, Hollywood Bowl fans, LA Phil fans, movie music fans.

Nearly every seat was filled with people who loved something to a strong level of fandom. That’s what made a concert like this so popular even when it was first announced toward the beginning of the year. These different types of fandom all brought together by a Disney animated film once again showed the world the power of popularity.

This wasn’t even the first time that a Disney live-to-film concert was held too! The Pixar In Concert series a few years ago were a delight because fandom surrounded the films and the incredible music that wove it all together.

The Little Mermaid concert and the attendees’ cheers, as well as those that you heard in all the social media videos, should have sent the message clear to Disney that more of these concerts should be organized.

As for what animated film should be turned into a live concert next and who should sing their tunes? Who knows, but I’ll for sure be their guests.

Special thanks to the LA Phil and Disney for having me as their guest for the last Little Mermaid concert this past Monday.
