There won’t be a Disney Infinity 4.0 for a while

During an online presentation earlier today, Disney Infinity leadership announced that Disney Infinity 3.0 will continue to grow with more figures and items from each Disney property. That means that Disney Infinity 4.0 will not be released this year.

“This year, we believe we raised the bar with the 3.0 version of our game, and we’re truly humbled to see that hard work and the support of our fans pay off as we hit another very important milestone for the franchise,” said John Blackburn, SVP & GM of Disney Infinity.

Blackburn went on to say that user feedback is what prompted the change in yearly updates to the game. It would allow the development team to focus on a wider variety of content through each of Disney’s brands. That begins with the addition of Disney Animation’s Zootopia addition and the already announced Marvel Battlegrounds play set, adding more Marvel characters and items to the game.

As if there wasn’t enough Disney in the game, even more playable items, characters, and settings will be added throughout the year and with each new movie, TV show, and attraction opening. “If it’s happening at The Walt Disney Company, it’s happening inside Disney Infinity,” continued Blackburn.

It’s appropriate that the game won’t get a 4.0 release as the addition of more playables are a minor release as opposed to a system release. The question is whether the additions and major numbered releases will be enough to keep gamers loyal to Disney’s flagship video game.

Disney’s Q1 2016 results reported a decrease in sales for Disney Infinity due to “higher inventory reserves and lower unit sales volume.” With the Company also now reporting a joint financial results for Interactive and Consumer Products, it’s possible that they are doing so to hide the declining results of Infinity which saved Interactive from tanking a few years ago at launch.

If that were to happen, there’s no need to worry about a Disney Infinity 4.0 release.
