There’s a new “Frozen” short film coming out next Christmas

If you can’t believe it has been 3 years since “Frozen” first hit theaters, you’re not alone. The animated classic has grown on to become the highest grossing animated film of all time, spurring many other products from Disney that include theme park attractions and toothbrushes.

The commercial success of Elsa and Anna has pushed the Company to continue to make products well into the decade, but Disney understands that they’ll need to create new things to freshen the franchise. That means new characters and that means new films.

But while “Frozen 2” is in the works currently, Disney Animation has been hard at work to tell new stories in Arendelle. We first saw “Frozen Fever” that told the story of how Arendelle prepped for Elsa first “official” birthday and now, they’ll be another short to tell of Arendelle’s first holiday celebration.

In “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure”, the royal sisters and their friends have no idea what the season is all about because they’ve been separated forever. In partnership with Olaf, they look to find the answer by looking through Arendelle and their citizen’s various traditions. While the journey involves Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Sven, the real driver of the story is Olaf.

“John Lasseter really thought it would be great to tell a story from Olaf’s perspective,” producer Roy Conli (“Tangled”) said. At the same time, it was pretty difficult to incorporate Olaf into a story about the holidays because “he is guileless and never gets mad,” said co-director Kevin Deters.

“I’ll hand it to the story team on this one who really found a catalyst for this story that begins and ends with my character,” said Josh Gad, who reprises his role of Olaf’s voice. “Olaf’s love and care about the people he loves really drives the search for the holiday answer forward.”

We’ll get to see how they all find the meaning of the holidays in about a year’s time. Production is well underway with it set to debut during the holiday season in 2017.
