This guy from New Zealand is creating viral videos of him remixing popular Disney songs
The internet has been home to many music covers, and one type of song is arguably covered more than any other songs on earth – Disney songs.
Since the explosion in popularity of “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” back in 2013, Disney has continued to be relaxed to artists who decided to cover their popular songs and post and release them on YouTube and digital marketplaces like iTunes. Thousands of artists have continued to post their Disney song covers since then, including some who just started a few months ago.
One of those people was the artist named Kast Away. And even though some of his Disney song covers are just a few months old, you’ve probably already come across them on your social media feeds.
It has only been three months since he started posting his covers that started obviously with “Let It Go.” In that short amount of time, he’s gained over 50,000 subscribers on YouTube and millions of views on his videos that have been posted to YouTube and Facebook.
Out of all the Disney song covers there are out there, why would so many people gravitate towards his? The answer was very much a creative one.
“All of my Disney music cover videos creatively answer one question: what if that Disney song was done by a rapper?,” Kast Away told DisneyExaminer in an exclusive interview from his new home in Australia. Kast, his stage name and the name he wants to go by, was inspired by the same upbringing most Millennial-aged people had.
“I grew up on the 90s Disney movies and just loved them as music. They’re filled with great lyrics and tunes… they really matched up with my other passion that I found later in life.”
That other passion was music, more specifically rap and hip-hop. Kast learned to create beats and instrument tracks with software and additional lyrics to fit. He tested his methods with other popular songs, but he always had a soft spot for reworking his favorite Disney songs.
The process to create one of his Disney remixes he says just “comes from the heart.” and sometimes in just a few days. He continued, “I just take the time to listen to the original song in my studio/bedroom and then just add things to it.” Kast very much wants to keep the essence of the original versions, so many of them include pieces of the original infused in it.
In keeping with the reason why he feels remixes exist, Kast doesn’t include his own custom lyrics to add to the song covers that give an even more contemporary feeling to it all. “My lyrics are still themed to the original messages,” he said. “For instance, my “Let It Go” lyrics were about how we should feel OK to let go of everyday problems that most people feel nowadays: past relationships, friend drama, all that.”
All of his lyrics in his Disney remixes are positive and don’t contain any foul language in trying to keep with attracting everyone to his music, which he believes is his calling in making the world better. “I hope that I’ll continue to uplift people through my music. That’s really what it’s all about for me.”
