This is what we call The Muppet (Primetime) Show!
Nearly 30 years since their last proper TV episode as The Muppets, the famous and timeless puppet people will be returning to TV. In Primetime.
Announced during televisions’ Upfront event where networks showcase their 2015-2016 lineup of shows, Disney*ABC Television announced the rebooted version of the childhood show that would be more “contemporary” and geared toward “maturer” audiences.
As for what “maturer” means, executives at the Upfront event said the content will always be family-friendly (even for “kids”), but expect the unexpected with the show diving into the Muppets’ lives away from the cameras. Think of the new show as “The Muppet Show” combined with “The Office”.
The Muppets return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires. This is a more adult Muppet show, for “kids” of all ages.
Bill Prady (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Bob Kushell (“Anger Management”) are co-writers and executive producers. Randall Einhorn (“Wilfred”), Bill Barretta,Debbie McClellan and Kyle Laughlinare also executive producers. “The Muppets” is produced by ABC Studios and The Muppets Studio.

ABC’s strategy to reboot Jim Henson’s characters is a simple one. As Baby Boomers and Millenials begin to grow up, nostalgia really begins to set in. Nostalgia is a big part of what people want in their media consumption today and giving The Muppets a coveted television spot in Primetime (and on Disney Junior) will serve both ABC’s purposes in the “throwback” market.
“The Muppets” will air on ABC this fall on Tuesdays at 8 PM e|p.
