This legendary Disney songwriter is about to air his PBS “concert”.
With so many holiday TV specials set to air this season, I recommend that if you were to miss any, don’t miss this one! It’s all about legendary Disney songwriter Richard Sherman; you know, part of Walt Disney’s favorite songwriting duo the Sherman Brothers.
For those scared to watch PBS programs because of their content, this isn’t a lengthy documentary either. It’s a rather casual program with Sherman and friends as they sit at a piano in a studio and sing songs and tell short stories about those songs together. Many of the songs that Sherman and friends will perform are some of the most beloved Disney songs of all time (yup, including ‘it’s a small world’)!
They include songs that range his and his late brother Robert’s 60+ year career with and apart from Disney, from their award-winning score from “Mary Poppins” to the rock & roll classic “You’re Sixteen”. More recently, Sherman will perform the new song he wrote for Disneyland’s 60th anniversary called “A Kiss Goodnight” with the song’s original vocalist and Broadway star Ashley Brown.
The 60-minute program, produced by noted producer/director/Disney fan Don Hahn, is very much meant to showcase Sherman and prove why he deserves the title of “legendary”. I’ve had the joy of meeting Richard on more than a few occasions and I can tell you that beyond his catchy, evergreen tunes, he’s a classy and kind gentleman who loves Disney like you and me.
Do yourself a favor and gather around your television set this Christmas season and listen to this fellow Disney fan’s songs and story. It’ll be great gift to give yourself and others this time of year!
“Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime” will air on PBS SoCal on Thursday, December 17 at 7:00 p.m. PST. Other locations: check local listings.
