This new short by two Pixar animators is heartbreakingly dark

Pixar has never been afraid to push the envelope, but this newest short by Pixar animators Andrew Coats & Lou Hamou-Lhadj may be the most heartbreaking short yet.

Borrowed Time tells the story of a sheriff coming to terms with his past. Though the premise seems simple, the short itself tells the story in a moving way. Borrowed Time is undoubtedly dark, unafraid to include themes like death and even hints of blood, pushing the short towards a more mature audience.

“A goal for us was to make something that kind of contested the notion of animation being a genre, and one for children specifically,” says Hamou-Lhadj, reports theverge.com. “We really wanted to make something that was a little bit more adult in the thematic choices, and show that animation could be a medium to tell any sort of story.”

It’s not the first time Pixar animators have gone beyond the scope of traditional Disney movies to create stories that are “a little bit more adult.” Feast director Patrick Osborne’s Pearl gave a wonderful perspective on growing up in with Google 360, and and The Present by Jacob Frey and Markus Kranzler led both into careers at Disney and Pixar.
