Top 10 Most Extraordinary Disney Sidekicks
These Disney sidekicks stopped at nothing to make sure their friends made all their dreams come true! No matter what the cost, these supporting characters brought the protagonist up when they were at their lowest. It’s time to bring these unsung heroes into their well-deserved spotlight! Let’s take a look at these beloved individuals who helped our Disney heroes and heroines.
10. Sven
Not only is Sven an adorable reindeer with dog like tendencies, but he also carried Kristoff and Anna for most of the film. Whenever they needed a ride Sven was always there to carry the load. He knew Kristoff’s real feelings for Anna, and didn’t let him run away when things got a little rough. This reindeer is better than any human being, and is the real MVP of Frozen!
9. Terk
Terk is Tarzan’s best friend, and readily welcomes him into the ape tribe even if he did look “freaky-lookin’.” She always tries to make Tarzan feel like he belongs, and keeps him out of trouble while still being her playful, fun, and adventurous self. She loves the spotlight combined with her spectacular sense of rhythm, which makes her one of the funnest Disney characters around.
8. Tinker Bell
One of Disney’s most popular and important sidekicks is no other than Tinker Bell. She truly plays a vital role in helping Peter Pan whenever he is in trouble. How else would Peter Pan whisk away his new friends to Neverland? This feisty fairy makes all the magic possible with her pixie dust, which allows them to fly. She is also a skillful tinker who has the ability to make and mend things! Although she may get a little jealous when Peter brings girls along for the adventure, she is very loyal to those she loves, and will eventually befriend those she originally despises if they prove themselves.
7. Pegasus
Pegasus and Hercules both meet when they were babies and were inseparable until Hercules is kidnapped from Mount Olympus and brought down to earth. When Zeus brings Pegasus back into Hercules’s life it is as if the two never separated. Wherever the big man wants to go, Pegasus is always there to fly him to his destination. Showing great intuition, Pegasus was weary of Meg who was working for Hades in the beginning of the film. Courageous, loyal, smart and a bit silly, Pegasus is a perfect companion for a Greek god like Hercules!
6. Olaf
Olaf is the happy-go-lucky snowman that just wants to give hugs and experience summer! He embodies all the playfulness, innocence, and closeness that Elsa and Anna once had as children. By being naïve, Olaf shows a sense of child-like wonder that makes him one of the most adored characters created in a Disney movie. Olaf is a sidekick willing to put everything on the line for the people he cares about. It’s his selfless act of making a fire for Anna, and risking his life in doing so that puts him on this list. Olaf is definitely a sidekick who is worth melting for.
5. Maximus
Maximus is the toughest, sword fighting horse you will ever see. Wait, he is probably the only sword fighting horse you will ever see! This noble steed is determined to capture his enemies no matter what, and even tracked down Flynn Ryder using his nose! Maximus shows that he is much more than a use of transportation, but a horse that is strong, smart, and fierce. After he is won over by Rapunzel’s dream to see the floating lights in the sky he becomes an ally for the heroine. He protects Rapunzel and Flynn on the rest of their journey, and forms a close bond with the duo. Maximus is a brave and bold sidekick that any hero would be lucky to go on an adventure with!
4. Sebastian
This crab goes against the king of the sea to help out a 16-year-old mermaid get a human prince to fall in love with her. If that doesn’t sing loyal sidekick I don’t know what will! Sebastian is basically the greatest wing crab ever. His Jamaican accent can make anybody fall in love. His serenade of “Kiss the Girl” did help spark the romance between Ariel and Eric. She didn’t even have to say a word and Prince Eric was already head over heals for her because of the perfectly orchestrated number that Sebastian put together! This crustacean is a class act that just wants the best for Ariel, whether it is under the sea or above on land. You can’t go wrong by having a knowledgeable, smooth talking shellfish in your corner.
3. Mushu
Mushu is a terrifying 3-foot dragon that rises…to wake up other spirits. This dragon believes that he can do anything, and makes sure Mulan gets through her training camp. Though he may stir up trouble, Mushu brings some spunk to the film that makes it one of the most memorable Disney movies ever. There is no doubt in my mind that without Mushu pushing Mulan she would have never defeated the Huns. Having a sidekick who cheers you on and doesn’t let you quite is an honor to have. Just don’t call this ferocious dragon a lizard because he won’t be afraid to bite you!
2. Genie
This genie has a giant personality that just bursts out! Who could blame him? He’s been trapped in a lamp for thousands of years. He has magical powers, knowledge that span generations, and great jokes that will always keep you entertained. There’s no question that Genie was a major reason in Aladdin’s success. He wasn’t only a wish granter, but above all, a pretty great friend to Al. With Genie as a sidekick there is a whole new world of possibilities at your fingertips! Not to mention his sense of humor is always spot on.
1. Timon and Pumbaa
Timon and Pumbaa are by far the greatest characters in The Lion King, and the greatest sidekick duo of all time! If it wasn’t for their help, there wouldn’t be a protagonist in this movie. They took a young Simba under their guidance when he was lost and afraid, and taught him how to survive off bugs. Not only did Timon and Pumbaa hook up their boy with his heartthrob, Nala, by singing the tantalizing song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” they also saved him from a pack of hyenas while incorporating an amazing hula dance bit! This dynamic duo taught us about being loyal, charismatic, and hakuna matata. These characters are so likeable they should have their own movie…oh wait, they do!
We all love them just as much as the main characters, and sometimes even more. These supporting characters are just as important as the hero of the story. They are the ones that get the protagonist to move forward in their journey, get back up when they are down, are their closest confidants, and help them achieve that happily ever after. With their support these amazing sidekicks end up becoming heroes in their own right.
